About this event
Location: This class will be taught in-person at 850 Battery St, San Francisco*.
Time: 10 am – 4 pm PST
Class length: 6 hours
Skill level: Advanced
Class Description: Based on a sampler in the Detroit Institute of Art’s collection, this workshop is a fast-paced, fun, deep dive into the intricacies of 2+ color blackwork as well as the detached buttonhole stitch technique. Students will work on a 6” x 14” sampler that is almost entirely stitched in double running blackwork technique with a bit of cross stitch. The kit will include a 30 page Chartpack with complete stitching instructions, 36 count linen and silk floss.
Recommended for advanced stitchers who have experience stitching on high count linen but advanced beginner-intermediate stitchers who have stitched on linen are also welcome.
About the instructor: Eilene Cross is an internationally recognized expert in needlework technique, specializing in samplers from the 17th-20th centuries from both Europe and the Americas. Eilene started her needlework education at the age of seven, learning first to knit and eventually adding crochet, embroidery, quilting, beading, and luceting into her repertoire. She has taught workshops for museums, guilds, and shops in all of these disciplines across the United States and the UK. Eilene is a descendant of a long line of needleworkers: her grandmother was an embroiderer of garments for the Czars of Russia!
Eilen’s main focus is to teach advanced, obscure, and rarely taught needlework techniques. Her workshops allow for plenty of time for stitching as well as getting to meet students from around the world who share their love of needlework.
Supplies: All materials will be provided during class.
