What You’ll Learn
Found objects hold a meaning of their own based on their history, who they belonged to, and what they are made of. In this two-day workshop we will explore the possibilities of embroidering on found objects, in an effort to give them new meaning and to create works of art.
Techniques/Stitches: Running stitch, chain stitch, back stitch, and whipped or laced stitches. Additionally, we will discuss how to turn non-fabric objects into canvases for embroidery. Some of the methods for altering found objects will be; drilling holes, puncturing objects with hammer and nail, and piercing surfaces with awls or needles.
Class Details
Equipment needed: Please bring with you a few found objects of your own to experiment with. These objects do not need to be made of fabric but should have the ability to be pierced in some way (for example, an old metal tin will work but a solid metal sculpture will not). Some examples of objects that will work well are music sheets, books, photographs, old metal tins, a cardboard or wooden box, magazines, hats, clothing. Basic threads and sewing supplies will be provided but you are also encouraged to bring your own if you like.
