In this class we’ll use freezer paper to build up layers of applique to create textured designs based on simple shapes.

Class length: 6 hours

Skill level: All levels

Class Description: Learn how to build up layers of colorful appliqué to create textured designs for use in a multitude of fashion or home apparel projects. Appliqués are based on geometric shapes which can then be embellished with embroidered stitching. Review examples from the educator’s own body of work, then choose fabric and a design to create your own. Fabric will be provided but stitchers are welcome to bring a favorite patterned or solid fabric from home to work into the design.

Kit Contents: Freezer paper with printed shapes, choice of various fabrics, Tire silk thread, purl cotton/sashiko threads, Sachiko thread and needle, needle puller, #9 embroidery needle, and printed instructions.

Supplies: All materials will be handed out to you at the start of class. We will provide scissors for cutting paper and fabric, iron, and ironing board (or pad).

Please feel free to bring a small sewing kit with your preferred tools. Especially handy is a thimble. Thimbles are very important for this type of sewing, and it is a very personal choice.
