Erica Wilson’s work inspired many people to get involved in embroidery, with easy instructions and contemporary patterns.

Class length: 5 hours

Skill level: Beginner

Class Description: Erica Wilson made embroidery both fun and easy for anyone who had a mind to sit down and stitch. With easy instructions and contemporary patterns, she inspired many people to get involved in embroidery. SFSNAD is continuing this mission in the spirit of Erica Wilson and has been the recipient of several works designed by the famous embroidery artist. With her embroidery art in mind, we have created our own patterns with a nod to Erica’s influence and legacy in the contemporary world of embroidery today.

In this kit, you will find several patterns to choose from, along with motifs that can easily be used to compose your very own Erica Wilson inspired design. Along with a beautiful color array of yarns, seven versatile stitches have been selected that will best create interest for the included designs.

Kit Contents: Fabric, Appletons wool and a needle

Supplies: Class kit will be sold separately. We’re partnering with Maydel as a source for all of your material needs. Once you are registered, you will receive further instructions on purchasing your kit for this class.

You will need to supply your own embroidery scissors.

Class Minimum: 3 students

About the Educator: Lauren is a textile artist with a particular interest in studying and preserving traditional garments and embroidery. This led her to studying with the Royal School of Needlework in the UK, and later with the Japanese Embroidery Center and Ecole Lesage as well. She has a BFA in Fashion Design from Columbia College in Chicago, and has received multiple awards for construction and design in costume and in hand embroidery, including the DCASE individual artist grant from the City of Chicago.

Before coming to SFSNAD, Lauren worked as a production assistant for visual artist Nick Cave in his Chicago studio, building soundsuits for museum installations and private collections. She has extensive experience as a freelance artist, assisting in costume production for various performances and competitions.
