Our Stumpwork Iris course offers an introduction to creating a three-dimensional wired figure in silk and needlelace.
Two-Session Class*: September 9 (10 am – 1 pm PST) and September 16 (10 am – 1 pm PST)
*When you register for Session 1, you’ll be registered for both sessions
Class length: 6 hours total
Skill Level: Intermediate
Class Description: Our Stumpwork Iris course offers an introduction to creating a three-dimensional wired figure in silk and needlelace. Additional elements include long and short stitching, wired cordonnet foundations with needlelace slips, stamens and stems in wrapped thread, fabric painting, and appliqué petals. These techniques can also be utilized for the creation of stumpwork hanging ornaments, pins or brooches, faux flowers for home decor, or even millinery sprays with other flower patterns.
Supplies: Class kit will be sold separately. We’re partnering with Maydel as a source for all of your material needs. Once you are registered, you will receive further instructions on purchasing your kit for this class.
Please note that kit price range for this class is around $82. You will need to supply your own embroidery scissors.

About the Educator: Lauren is a textile artist with a particular interest in studying and preserving traditional garments and embroidery. This led her to studying with the Royal School of Needlework in the UK, and later with the Japanese Embroidery Center and Ecole Lesage as well. She has a BFA in Fashion Design from Columbia College in Chicago, and has received multiple awards for construction and design in costume and in hand embroidery, including the DCASE individual artist grant from the City of Chicago.
Before coming to SFSNAD, Lauren worked as a production assistant for visual artist Nick Cave in his Chicago studio, building soundsuits for museum installations and private collections. She has extensive experience as a freelance artist, assisting in costume production for various performances and competitions.
